It’s a new year! Happy 2022!

We’ve gotten through all the hoopla and excitement and it’s time to settle in and work on our goals.

At least that’s what everyone seems to be telling us.

You hear it on TV shows, see it on social media. You’ve probably been asked by at least one friend or family member. What are your plans for the year? What is your word for the year? What are your new year resolutions?

If you are gagging over it all right now, turning away in disgust, please know that you are not alone. Less than 50% of adults actually make resolutions and less than 10% of them achieve them.

Let me be clear. I am all for reflecting on the previous year and setting intentions for the new year. I think it can be a valuable exercise and lead to growth, both personally and professionally.

But I also believe that many people make it too complicated. And when we are faced with writing down ten things we want to work on and creating new positive action items and breaking down those ideas into small steps and quantifying those steps and creating a deadline for each step, and, and, and… it’s just too much. It’s overwhelming. Of course we avoid it. Furthermore, what’s the point? I don’t even know what I’m preparing for dinner, much less what will be happening by the end of December 2022.

So how do we uncomplicate it?

Let me suggest a new way to gain clarity for the year ahead. Right now. In less than five minutes.

Grab a piece of paper or open the notes on your phone. (Or not, it’s fine to just think about this.)

  1. For one minute, quiet your body and mind. Turn off distractions. Breathe. Ground yourself.
  2. For one minute, think about what went well in 2021… and what didn’t. What rises to the top?
  3. For one minute, think about what you want out of 2022. Is there a project that you want to work on? What do you want to FEEL in 2022?
  4. Jot down a couple thoughts.

(Feeling like you want to spend more time on this? Go for it!)

That’s it. You have identified your priorities and you have direction for 2022. That’s all you really need right now. Will it change? Maybe. And that’s okay. (Seriously, after the last two years, we all know it’s likely to change!)

Now you are ready to get to work! And so begins the next challenge… Getting Started. More on that later.

Again… Happy 2022!
