Do you ever have those days where you write the perfect social media post, pour your heart into it, and then… stare at the “Publish” button like it’s a detonator?
You’ve got the graphics ready, the caption is spot on, and you know your message could help someone. But then, that familiar tightening in your chest happens. You start re-reading the second paragraph for the fifteenth time. You wonder if the lighting in the photo makes you look “unprofessional.” You worry that someone will see it and think, “Who does she think she is?”
For the high-achieving ADHD woman, visibility is a double-edged sword. We are naturally creative, visionary, and often quite charismatic which are the perfect ingredients for a successful entrepreneur or solopreneur. But “being seen” feels like an open invitation for people to notice the “messy” parts of our ADHD. The typos we missed because our brains read what we meant to write, the late emails, or the fact that we’re currently working from a desk buried under three days of mail and half-empty coffee mugs.
This is where Imposter Syndrome loves to set up camp. It whispers, “If they really see you, they’ll realize you’re just winging it.” It tells you that your success is a fluke and that total visibility is just a fast track to being “found out.”
Let me tell you a secret: Everyone is winging it. But your “winging it” comes with a side of ADHD brilliance, innovation, empathy, and lightning-fast problem-solving that the world actually needs.
The ADHD Visibility Tax: Why We Hide
As ADHD entrepreneurs, we often carry the “Visibility Tax”. Because we struggle with executive functions like organization or consistency, we develop a deep-seated fear that our brand needs to be “perfect” to compensate for our “flaws.”
We think: “If I can just look perfectly polished, no one will know I forgot to pay that invoice until the second notice.” But here’s the truth: Your people don’t want polished. They want YOU. When we hide, we aren’t just protecting ourselves from judgment; we are actually blocking the very people who need our specific brand of magic. The ADHD mind is a “top-down” processor—we see the big picture, the connections, and the soul of a project before we see the details. That is your superpower. But you can’t use that power if you’re crouching behind a curtain of “someday when I have it all together.”
Hack #36: Take a Risk (The 10% Rule)
Visibility is a muscle, and just like any muscle, it feels weak and shaky when you first start training it. If you wait until you feel “ready” or “perfectly branded” to show up, you’ll be waiting forever. In the world of ADHD coaching, we talk a lot about the “Perfectionism-Procrastination Loop.” We want it perfect, so we don’t start, then we feel guilty for not starting, so we hide even more.
Taking a risk doesn’t mean jumping off a cliff. It doesn’t mean you have to go live on national television tomorrow. It means engaging in the 10% of discomfort.
What is a “micro-risk” you can take today?
- Posting the video even if your hair isn’t perfect.
- Sharing a “behind the scenes” shot of your messy (but productive!) desk.
- Sending that pitch email to a dream collaborator before you feel 100% qualified.
Growth lives in that 10% margin. Every time you take a micro-risk, you are telling your nervous system: “See? We did the scary thing, and we didn’t die.” The more you do it, the more your “comfort zone” expands to include being seen.
Hack #8: Share First (Beating Rejection Sensitivity)
Many ADHD women struggle with Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD). This is that intense emotional pain we feel when we perceive rejection or criticism. In business, RSD can be paralyzing. It makes a “like-less” post feel like a personal failure and a constructive comment feel like a soul-crushing attack.
Because we worry so much about what “they” (the faceless internet) will think, we tend to keep our best ideas locked in our heads. To break this cycle, try the Share First method.
Before you let your brain spiral into a “what if they don’t like it” frenzy, share your idea, your draft, or your scary goal with a trusted friend, a mentor, or a supportive community of fellow ADHD entrepreneurs.
Why this works for the ADHD mind:
- Dopamine Boost: Getting positive feedback from a “safe” person provides the dopamine hit you need to actually hit “send” to the public.
- Reality Check: A good friend will tell you that your “typo” isn’t a business-ruiner and that your idea is actually brilliant.
- Accountability: Once you’ve shared it with one person, it’s “out there.” It’s no longer just a thought; it’s a commitment.
Getting your ideas out of your head and into the light kills the shame that imposter syndrome feeds on. Shame thrives in secrecy; it dies in connection.
The EFT Tool: Tapping for Visibility Panic
When the “Who do I think I am?” thoughts start looping and your heart starts racing at the thought of being visible, it’s time to move out of your head and into your body. We can’t “think” our way out of a nervous system response. We have to regulate it.
EFT Tapping is like an “undo” button for your stress response. It calms your nervous system and brings your logical, thinking brain back online.
Where to tap: Choose your favorite point or tap through them all (top of head, eyebrow point, side of eye, under eye, under nose, under mouth, collarbone, under arm)
Why it supports you: Tapping on these acupressure points reduces the feeling of being stuck, calms the “fight or flight” reaction and assists with the ability to make decisions, take action, and have the courage to follow through. When you tap, you are sending a physical signal to the amygdala (the brain’s alarm system) that it’s okay to stand down.
The Script: As you tap gently, say these words out loud or in your head:
“Even though I’m terrified of being seen… and I’m worried they’ll see the ‘real’ me… I accept myself and right here, right now, I am safe.”
Take a deep breath. Notice how the “detonator” feeling around that Publish button starts to fade into just… a button.
